Three grids, three different problems they solve

Anyone who has looked at Chinese handwriting worksheets for more than five minutes has run into three grid patterns, all loosely called “the Chinese writing grid” in English as if interchangeable. They are not. Each was designed to fix a different problem, and using the wrong one at the wrong stage either does nothing or gets in the way.

  • 田字格 (tián zì gé), “field-character grid” — a square split into four quadrants by a dashed horizontal and vertical line, named for its resemblance to 田 (field). Trains where a character’s parts sit relative to centre: left versus right, top versus bottom.
  • 米字格 (mǐ zì gé), “rice-character grid” — the same square with two diagonals added, radiating in eight directions like the strokes of 米 (rice). Trains diagonal stroke direction and radial symmetry.
  • 回宫格 (huí gōng gé), “nested-palace grid” — a smaller dashed square nested inside the outer one, its name borrowing the shape of 回 itself, a box inside a box. Trains proportion: how much of the cell a character’s core should fill, and how far strokes may extend beyond it.

All three show up in worksheet generators, including our own Chinese character tracing worksheet generator, so it is worth being precise about what each is for before defaulting to one and leaving it on.

Tian Zi Ge: four quadrants for a first-time writer

Tian zi ge is the grid mainland Chinese elementary textbooks use to display new characters in the early grades, and it is the default most worksheet generators load first. Its only guide lines are a dashed horizontal and vertical centre line, giving four quadrants — deliberately minimal, because a child who has never written a character before is already juggling stroke order, pen pressure, and shape at once. The grid answers one question: does this character lean left or right, and is it top-heavy or bottom-heavy? Because it only asks for comparison against a single vertical and horizontal line, it also tolerates a wide range of cell sizes without the lines getting harder to read the way a busier grid can.

Mi Zi Ge: eight lines for stroke direction and symmetry

Mi zi ge takes the tian zi ge cross and adds both diagonals, giving eight reference lines radiating from the centre instead of two. That helps with a specific problem: characters with diagonal strokes (撇 piě and 捺 nà, the left- and right-falling strokes) or strong left-right symmetry, where a few degrees of angle error makes a character look unbalanced even when every stroke is individually correct. The diagonals give a fixed angle to aim for rather than asking the writer to judge it by eye.

Sources genuinely disagree on when to introduce it. Guidance aimed at copying printed models (临摹) sometimes recommends mi zi ge early, since more reference points help copying. Guidance aimed at children meeting characters for the first time points the other way — mainland textbooks default to plain tian zi ge in the lower grades, because a first-time writer has no stable sense of the four quadrants yet, and eight competing lines become noise rather than signal. We come down on that second side for beginners; the next section explains why.

Hui Gong Ge: a nested frame for proportion, not direction

Hui gong ge looks least familiar to English speakers because it doesn’t resemble a character the way the other two do. Sources attribute the design to calligrapher Yang Weiguo (杨为国): an inner frame (内宫, “inner palace”) holding a character’s compact core, inside an outer frame (外宫, “outer palace”) that leaves room for strokes reaching outward — long verticals, hooks, sweeping diagonals. The principle is usually summarized as “tight inside, loose outside” (内紧外松).

That makes it a proportion tool, not a direction tool: it says nothing about which way a stroke should slant, only how big the core should be relative to the space it may occupy. It suits learners with basic stroke control who consistently crowd or sprawl a character across the cell — a later-stage fix, not a starting grid — and shows up more in calligraphy workbooks than ordinary primary curriculum. Not to be confused with 九宫格 (jiǔ gōng gé, “nine-palace grid”), an unrelated 3×3 grid used in adult calligraphy for brush-stroke analysis.

Why eight guide lines can overwhelm a beginner

It’s tempting to assume more reference lines can only help — worst case, ignore the ones you don’t need. In practice a dense guide grid competes visually with the character itself, and a child still learning what a stroke looks like has to first sort out which lines are the character and which are scaffolding. That sorting cost is trivial once you know the character; it is not trivial on a first attempt. This is a general handwriting-instruction principle, not a Chinese-specific one: our English handwriting worksheet generator and printable handwriting paper keep guide lines to baseline, midline, and headline rather than adding more “for extra help.” The usual fix for a struggling writer is a bigger cell with fewer lines, not more lines at the same size.

Stroke order is not a formality

Stroke order is easy to treat as tradition to humor, but it does real work beyond appearance. Speed and legibility: a practiced sequence produces smoother strokes than reconstructing the shape from scratch each time. Recall: motor memory tied to a fixed order helps reproduce a character not seen in a while, especially past ten or twelve strokes. Dictionary lookup: stroke-based indexing (笔画排检法) is a real, still-used way to find a character by shape rather than pronunciation, and the stroke count it relies on assumes standard decomposition. A handful of input methods, including 嘸蝦米 and 大易 in Taiwan, also encode characters partly by writing sequence.

Mainland China’s current reference is the 通用规范汉字笔顺规范 (GF 0023-2020), issued by the Ministry of Education and State Language Commission, effective March 2021, replacing a 1997 predecessor. It records each stroke order three ways: written out stroke by stroke, as five basic stroke types (横 héng, 竖 shù, 撇 piě, 点 diǎn, 折 zhé), and as a numbered sequence. Simplified and traditional characters do not always match

Simplification didn’t only change how characters look; in a number of cases it changed the stroke count and order for the same word. That matters for dictionary lookup by stroke count, and it matters for handwriting, since a memorized order doesn’t automatically transfer between forms. The open dataset our tool relies on carries an acknowledged, unresolved issue along exactly these lines.

Regional convention adds another layer. Three broad stroke-order traditions are in active use: a traditional one continued in Taiwan and Hong Kong, tracing to pre-1949 practice; a modern mainland convention reformed after 1956 alongside simplification, including changes suited to horizontal writing; and a Japanese kanji convention with its own calligraphic history, which diverged further after Japan’s 1946 script reforms. A character shared across all three is not guaranteed to be written in the same order in each.

What our stroke data actually is, and where it falls short

Our stroke outlines and sequences come from the open-source Make Me a Hanzi project, via the hanzi-writer-data npm package, which extracted vector shapes from the Arphic AR PL KaitiM Kaishu font with community-corrected stroke sequences. It is released under the Arphic Public License; we copy the files byte-for-byte with the original license text, keeping redistribution inside the license’s “verbatim copies” terms rather than triggering its obligations for modified derivatives.

Two limits follow. Coverage: rather than the full upstream ~9,000 characters, our site ships around 3,500 — the Level-1 list from the mainland’s 通用规范汉字表 (General Standard Chinese Character List) plus common surname and given-name characters, since name practice is how most visitors arrive at the tool. A character outside that set has no stroke data yet. Convention: the dataset targets one mainland-simplified stroke order per character — a solid default for mainland or simplified practice, but not authoritative for Traditional-character order, Taiwan/Hong Kong classroom convention, or Japanese kanji. If teaching 繁體字 or kanji specifically, cross-check a locally published stroke-order chart instead.

Picking a grid size in millimetres

Commercial mainland exercise books commonly use roughly 10 mm cells, fine once a learner has reasonable pen control. For a first-time writer, several sources on early handwriting instruction argue 10 mm is too small for developing fine motor control, recommending 15 mm or larger at the earliest stage. A rough progression: 18–22 mm for absolute beginners and high-stroke-count characters, where extra space keeps strokes and starting points legible; 13–15 mm once motor control and familiarity improve; eventually ordinary handwriting size with no grid. There is no single mandated size — standards vary by region and publisher — so treat this as a starting range, not a rule.

Putting it together

Start beginners on tian zi ge at a larger cell size, with stroke order shown. Move to mi zi ge only once a specific problem appears — diagonals landing at the wrong angle, or a symmetric character consistently looking lopsided — rather than switching by default. Reach for hui gong ge later still, once the remaining issue is sizing rather than direction.
